captive orca profiles 125 kandu VII
Kandu VII - was captured in November 1984 in Iceland along with Bingo, Patty, and Junior. Kandu and Junior were moved to Marineland Ontario. In 1990 Junior was moved to a "warehouse" where he passed away a few years later. Kandu 7 was well liked by the females and he soon started building his family. In August 1989, Nootka V gave birth to a male, named Splash, fathered by Kandu VII. In 1992 Splash was moved to SeaWorld California. In August 1992 Kiska gave birth to a male, fathered by Kandu VII. In October 1992, Nootka V gave birth to a female, named Neocia. A few days later, Kiska's calf passed away. In August 1994 Kiska gave birth to a male, named Kanuck, fathered by Kandu VII. In April 1996 Nootka V gave birth to a female named Malik, fathered by Kandu VII. In November 1996, Kiska gave birth to another male, named Nova, fathered by Kandu VII. In 1998, Kanuck passed away. Later that year, Kandu, Kiska, and Nootka V were moved to a new orca exhibit called Friendship Cove. Neocia, Malik, and Nova stayed in the show pool, King Wardolf's Theater, where they passed away over a few years. In September 1998, Kiska gave birth to a male, named Hudson, fathered by Kandu. In December 1999 Nootka V gave birth to a male, named Algonquin, fathered by Kandu. In August 2002 Algonquin passed away. In August 2004 Kiska gave birth to a female, named Athena, fathered by Kandu. While Kiska tended to Athena, Kandu and Hudson were mostly together, until October 2004 when Hudson passed away. There were also miscarriages inbetween. Although he was no doubt a prolific breeder, out of 13 calves he outlived all barring one Athena. When Kandu wasn't performing he spent most of his time in the back pool where he just floated at the surface, the tank was barely bigger then him. When Marineland built a bigger tank he was a little more active but still spent much of his time just floating, Marineland dubbed him lazy. On December 21st 2005 8 months after his first born Splash died he passed away. It was released that he had cancer. He was 30 years old, he had been a good father looking after them when Kiska wouldn't, had spent the majority of his time breeding, suffered his calves being taken away and dying and he finally outlived only one of them. He was one of the biggest orca in captivity measuring over 23 feet in length and was one of the longest in captivity being there for 22 years.
