: Lou Gerhig died from ALS also known as Lou Gerhigs disease. The disease is an awful disease, your muscles die slowly, but your mind is intact. Its really sad to see someone you know & love suffer from this disease, from being totally independent to totally dependent in just a few years. There has only been one person known to have the disease for longer than 5-6 years. Stephen Hawkins has had it for over 21years. I feel for him and his care givers. RIP Lou Gerhig and my mother in law who passed in 2005 from Lou Gerhigs disease.
