R.I.P. Jack Cardiff

R.I.P. Jack Cardiff
Oscar-winning cinematographer and director Jack Cardiff has died aged 94. The British Film Institute, who were in touch with Cardiff's family, said he died at his Cambridgeshire home surrounded by family members after a short illness. Cardiff's credits include film classics such as The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, Sons And Lovers and Girl On A Motorcycle. His accolades also include the OBE and a Bafta Special Award. Born on September 18 1914, to parents from a music hall background, Cardiff's showbusiness career spanned nine decades. His first job on leaving school was on the film The Informer in 1928. In the 1930s he was chosen to be one of Technicolor's first trainees and for the next decade he worked on varied assignments. Cardiff worked with some of the movie greats including Marilyn Monroe and Sophia Loren. Monroe was said to have described him as "the best in the world". He won an Oscar for Black Narcissus and was also presented with an Honorary Oscar in 2001. Throughout his hugely successful career in the film industry Jack worked with some of Hollywood’s most beautiful women. He was inspired by them to preserve some of that beauty not on moving film this time, but through still portraits,(as seen in this picture of him alongside his work) which he exhibited recently.
