what’s a VOCALOID? Basically, it’s a singing synthetizer application made by Yamaha. Why is it so popular? I meant, it’s just a program that sings… Well, the truth is, it wasn’t popular. Until Hatsune Miku was bornt, that is.
Let’s begin with the history of VOCALOIDs. At first, back then on January 2004, Yamaha finally finished the development of VOCALOID, and voice libraries from third party companies were released. The English ones (LEON, LOLA, and MIRIAM) were released by Zero-G Limited in the UK. While the Japanese ones (KAITO and MEIKO) were released by Crypton Future Media in Japan. Well, it isn’t so popular and it was just used for Professional Music Users. In January 2007, Yamaha released an updated version, VOCALOID2. Zero-G and PowerFX released PRIMA and SweetAnn. They just take the original approach for proffesional music users. Crypton, however, took a different approach with this one.
They made the “Character Vocal Series”. Which is basically, like an anime character (Just to clarify things here, Hatsune Miku or the other VOCALOIDs are NOT an anime). What they meant was they’re going to make voice samples from voice actresses (or voice actors) and released a product (a VOCALOID voice library). Why not proffesional singers? Well, crypton firstly intended to do so, but the singers refuse, scared of people making a version of their songs in the VOCALOID software with their voice. So now they have the “Character Vocal Series”. A voice from Voice Actors or Voice Actresses.
Each character on the Character Vocal Series was given an anime-type character with specifications on age, height, weight, and musical forte (as in the type of music, range and tempo). The characters of the first two installments of the series are created by illustrator Kei. So what happened? It boomed. Not only does proffesional music users are happy with it, even light computer users began to use the software and made great songs with it.
The first in the series was Hatsune Miku, and this is where the VOCALOID boom really begun. Thousands of people bought the software, made a fanart on Miku, or created a song featuring Hatsune Miku. Most people are amazed by the character design, and became really interested in VOCALOID. She’s so popular, people are beginning to make mangas on her, and she even appeared on two games!
After that, the rest just builds on its own. VOCALOID Rankings began to appear, Nico Nico Douga is filled with VOCALOID musics. And it became really popular. Kagamine Rin/Len was released, featuring one of my favorite voice actresses, Asami Shimoda, which is why I owned the software and started to get really interested on VOCALOIDs. People made their own original characters (by changing the voice of Hatsune Miku or the other VOCALOIDs), such as Akita Neru and Yowane Haku.
So there you have it. Those are VOCALOIDs.
