The Birds' Wedding

Challenge in Reflections ---------------------- I’d like to introduce you to the Sorbs and one of their wonderful celebrations: the Birds’ Wedding. On the eve of the 25th January children put a plate on the window sill or in front of the door. The next morning, this plate is filled with candy. The goodies have been brought by birds. They thank the children for all the food they gave them throughout the winter months. So they share their wedding meal with the children. In kindergarten and school children will celebrate the birds’ wedding by dressing up and singing. Sometimes the children wear Sorbian wedding clothes instead of dressing up as birds. Am Vorabend des 25. Januar stellen Kinder einen Teller auf das Fensterbrett oder vor die Tür. Am nächsten Morgen finden sich darauf dann Süßigkeiten. Die Leckereien sind von Vögeln gebracht worden. Sie beteiligen die Kinder am Hochzeitsmahl und danken ihnen für die Winterfütterung. Im Kindergarten und in der Schule feiern die Kinder dann als Vögel verkleidet die eigentliche Vogelhochzeit mit Gesang, szenischem Spiel oder Festumzügen.
