Jadwiga Smosarska - a Polish prewar silent film diva

Jadwiga Smosarska, właściwie Jadwiga Filipina Asmosarska (ur. 23 września 1898 w Warszawie, zm. 1 listopada 1971 w Warszawie) – polska aktorka teatralna i filmowa. Zadebiutowała w 1919 na deskach Teatru Dramatycznego w Warszawie rolą Lilii w Ciotce Karola T. Brandona. Do początku II wojny światowej grała w teatrach stołecznych. Debiutem filmowym był obraz Aleksandra Hertza Dla szczęścia 1919 według dramatu Stanisława Przybyszewskiego. Absolwentka warszawskiej szkoły dramatycznej, którą ukończyła z wyróżnieniem w 1920. Choć zagrała w 26 polskich filmach, to częściej występowała na deskach teatralnych, grając łącznie w 40 różnych sztukach. Kino przyniosło jej jednak tak wielką popularność, że przez wiele osób (zarówno publiczność, jak i krytyków) była uważana za największą gwiazdę polskiego przedwojennego kina, wygrywając w wielu plebiscytach popularności. Od listopada 1939 przebywała w USA, gdzie zajęła się pracą społeczną wśród Polonii. Po wojnie wielokrotnie odwiedzała Polskę, by ostatecznie powrócić z mężem do kraju na stałe w 1970. Jadwiga Smosarska, and actually Jadwiga Filipina Asmosarska (born Sept 23 1898 Warsaw, died Nov 1 1971 Warsaw) – a Polish theatre and film actress. Made a debut in 1919 in the Drama Theatre in Warsaw with the rle of Lilia in “The Aunt” by Karol T. Brandon. Till the beginning of World War II she played in the capital’s theatres. Her film debut was in “For being happy” by Aleksander Hertz, based on the Stanisław Przybyszewski drama play. A graduate of the Warsaw Drama School, which she finished with honours in 1920. Although she starred 26 Polish silent prewar movies, she more often acted on the stage, scoring over 40 plays. Cinema brought such an enormous popularity to her, however, that most of the audience and the critics found her the biggest Polish film star. Since November 1939, Smosarska stayed in the uSA, where she was up to helping the Polish emigrants. After the war she visited Poland many times, where she finally returned for good with her husband in 1970.
